Seagate Software Defined Storage Solution with Scality

Seagate and Scality have jointly developed a solution for petabyte-scale use cases like Active Archive, Distributed Computing, Web & Cloud Services, and Content Distribution. Seagate storage enclosures and Scality RING software have been purposely chosen and configured to create a multi-application, multi-workload storage solution with strong performance, high availability, and enterprise-level reliability.

Scality Seagate Solution Use Cases

Active Archive Distributed Computing Web & Cloud Services Content Distribution
Enable new use cases and increase the value of archives with great performance at the cost of AWS Glacier or tape (active archive is readable in less than 15 seconds). Enable new use cases and enhance analytic results with a large, cost-effective secondary tier behind high-speed parallel file systems (Lustre/GPFS), Big Data, or other HPC applications. Competitively launch Cloud services (XaaS) like Photo/Document sharing, Social Networks, Online backup/archive with multi-workload and multi-tenant storage. Enable any type of rich media or unified media workflow, including video distribution (e.g. CDN and VOD origin servers), with multi-application scale-out storage.

Reference Architecture

The design below is a building block that scales out linearly and provides 2PB raw storage per block. Usable capacity depends on the optimal data protection model for the use case. Not included are the potentially necessary servers for the File and Object connectors. Please see the Reference Hardware Architecture document for more information. Note that additional configurations are being developed by Scality and Seagate teams to address broader requirements (such as smaller files).

BASED ON SEAGATE EBOD – 84-BAY CHASSIS

• 84 4TB drives per EBOD enclosure
• One 1U storage server per EBOD (SAS-attached)
• Six pairs of 5U EBOD and 1U storage server per 42U rack
• File and object interfaces
• 2PB raw in a rack
• 128GB memory required
• Four 400GB SSD required
• Objects must be ~450KB average size or larger (based on this specific configuration)
