25 By Paul Speciale, CMO, Scality We’re pleased to share that Scality now ranks #1 in both Hybrid Cloud and Cloud-native Storage in the 2021 Gartner® Critical Capabilities for Distributed File Systems and Object Storage. We’re ranked in the top three for Backup and Archive Use Cases. We’re also tied for third place in Analytics, putting us in the top 5. This ranking builds on our recent placement (for a sixth year) in the Leaders Quadrant of the Gartner Magic Quadrant. What exactly does this mean for the industry? And for Scality and our customers? Let’s dive in. What Gartner Critical Capabilities represents A Critical Capabilities document is a comparative analysis that scores competing products or services against a set of critical differentiators identified by Gartner. A Gartner Magic Quadrant™ provides a graphical competitive positioning of four types of technology providers, in markets where growth is high and provider differentiation is distinct. Critical Capabilities research complements a Gartner Magic Quadrant by allowing deeper insight into the providers’ product or service offerings by identifying which ones best fit various use cases. Magic Quadrants position vendors in a market, while Critical Capabilities provides a deeper dive into the providers’ product and service offerings. Magic Quadrants contain a broader analysis of the vendors in a market, while the companion Critical Capabilities directly focuses on the product/service offering. As companion research notes, they offer a market and product/service view that provides powerful insight when making technology decisions. For the Critical Capabilities report, Gartner analysts evaluated 17 file and object storage products against eight critical capabilities and seven use cases relevant to I&O leaders. We believe that the two reports together provide a holistic view of the vendors in a market to give actionable insights on which products or services are a best fit for various user cases. Think of it as the crème de la crème of buyer’s guides – a sort of Consumer Reports analysis for IT. Digging into the rankings As the industry and consumer needs/demands continue to change, we’re finely tuned in and updating and evolving our portfolio and technology in tandem. One of the biggest such changes impacting the industry is the rise of hybrid cloud – Gartner has estimated that by 2025, 85% of infrastructure strategies will integrate on-premises, colocation, cloud and edge delivery options. That’s compared with 20% in 2020. This trend is dominating conversations in the industry as businesses move to cloud-native applications and infrastructure. We believe Gartner is also tracking this trend as it relates to object storage through the Cloud-Native Applications Use Case. This looks at the fit of object storage solutions for this world of data hungry applications that will be deployed on Kubernetes. We expect these applications to generate even more data than legacy workloads. That’s because they will support more users, can be available 24×7, and in many cases, also embed AI and Machine Learning technology. For 2021, Gartner has ranked Scality as the #1 object storage solution for this use case. This has been a key driver for our solutions – as validated by our #1 rank in this year’s Critical Capabilities report for both hybrid cloud storage and for cloud-native application storage use cases. A match with our strategy and vision We feel that these rankings underscore the work we are doing at Scality to best serve our customers with the solutions that truly fit today’s use cases. Our vision is shaped by market trends and emerging patterns as we look to develop the solutions for today’s customer problems and those of the future.
