Architecting for cyber resiliency: Start with a solid foundation

Cybercriminals are constantly innovating new ways to take what is yours. Building a solid foundation to protect against these threats is the focus of my recent article in Network ComputingStructured for success: 4 architectural pillars of cyber resilience.

Mastering cyber resilience requires a solid architectural foundation. The four key pillars I refer to in the article are the basis of a solid resilience strategy: network-wide visibility, immutability, archive tiering, and scalable backup and recovery infrastructure.

We now know that malicious actors aren’t content to just infiltrate your network; they’re after your backups, too. The 2023 Veeam Ransomware Trends report found that backups were targeted in 93% of ransomware attacks, and 76% of responding organizations said they’d lost at least some of their backup repositories in an attack.

The key takeaway? To achieve comprehensive cyber resilience, this threat to backups must be addressed thoroughly and decisively.

Achieving multi-level cyber resilience: Don’t ignore your foundation

Tech-savvy businesses understand that building a solid cybersecurity and resilience strategy requires a multi-level approach. Each layer requires a different set of tools and strategies to protect against potential attacks.

The “human layer” requires best practices around training and security protocols; the perimeter and network may require automated security monitoring. But a successful cyber resilience strategy must adequately address the foundational layer: Data security for mission-critical assets at the bottom of the infrastructure stack.

Cybercriminals are after the precious crown jewels of your organization — your mission-critical data. Protecting it requires a best-in-class backup and recovery strategy that includes data protection via immutability, archive tiering and scalable infrastructure.

Simply put: A highly cyber-resilient data storage solution is your last line of defense against ransomware and other threats to recoverability.

Cyber resilience is critical to the security of an organization’s data — and possibly to an organization’s survival. To learn more about the architectural foundation you need, read the full article here.
