Why the hype? The 2022 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Distributed File Systems and Object Storage

For the seventh year in a row, Scality has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Distributed File Systems and Object Storage — and while this isn’t the most earth-shattering news, it is still an important milestone for the IT leaders who depend on us.

Each year, we eagerly wait for the latest report to drop. Behind the scenes, vendors scramble to get their Magic Quadrant announcements launched, and industry pundits race to deliver the scoop first.

Why the anticipation and rush? Because the Gartner Magic Quadrant truly matters to customers. It’s the Consumer Reports of IT. From Fortune 500 companies to the smallest startups, they all recognize Gartner as a reliable source for evaluating technology across IT categories.

So, let’s dig in to what Gartner says about Scality in this year’s report.

Gartner analysts evaluated a total of 17 vendors and positioned Scality in the Leaders’ quadrant, along with four other companies.

Leaders are recognized for their ability to execute against their current vision and for being well-positioned for the future.

At Scality, we’ve focused our product strategy largely on addressing key industry challenges that include:

  • The hyper-fragmentation of data across too many devices, different data center locations and clouds, and an untold number of different solutions used to store data vs. search for data
  • Increased dependency on single-vendor innovation — in other words, the AWS monopoly
  • Increased frequency and severity of malware and ransomware attacks on corporate data
  • The continuing trend and increasing risk from ungoverned “shadow data silos” influenced by cloud-native development, DevOps and open-source offerings

As described by Gartner: The Scality RING solution runs on-premises and integrates with the public cloud. Scality offers an object storage platform, with native file protocol support, for high-capacity unstructured data workloads and runs as software on commodity hardware.

We earned high marks for our integrations, ability to scale, and customer experience. These are areas where we have worked hard — and continue to work hard — to deliver superior outcomes for our customers.

Gartner called attention to the fact that Scality is well-suited for analytics, backup, cloud-native apps, hybrid-cloud storage and archiving use cases.

For all vendor offerings evaluated in the Magic Quadrant, Gartner also notes some cautions. Despite being named a Leader for 7 out of 7 years, we’re not resting on our laurels. We incorporate this valuable feedback into our product strategy and roadmap planning for upcoming releases.

Case in point: In addition to RING, Scality now offers ARTESCA — new ultra-simple object storage software for customers who require a lightweight solution to solve single workload or small capacity requirements, or for edge deployments. Our scale-out file system now offers a new flash-tiering capability to make it a great fit for Tier 1, lower-latency NAS workloads such as in medical imaging and live TV (media streaming), and we make continual improvements in systems management and monitoring.

An ecosystem of integrations

The analysts at Gartner called out the following as attractive differentiators for Scality — our software-defined deployment capabilities, cloud integrations, and integrated file and object storage services as a single solution.

Also noted was the fact that in the past year, we’ve added:

  • Active/active S3 replication
  • Multisite asynchronous replication
  • Storage acceleration by supporting multiple storage tiers, tape system management integration and small object performance acceleration

A dedication to scalability

As the Magic Quadrant report points out, we have a proven track record of successful multi-petabyte, geographically distributed deployments across almost every vertical.

This recognition is particularly meaningful to us. We pride ourselves on providing our customers with solutions customized to their unique needs — whether they’re working in healthcare, law enforcement, aeronautics, media & entertainment, or almost any other industry.

Putting customers first

At Scality, providing superior customer experience is non-negotiable — and it’s something we constantly strive to perfect.

We’re delighted that Gartner highlighted as a strength that their clients’ feedback is positive about the quality of Scality sales, presales and technical support. They also noted our increased support capabilities via a new premium support offering called Scale Care Services.

Scality: Still a Leader

We’re delighted to be recognized so prominently, once again, in what is widely considered one of the industry’s most important reports — and we’re in elite company, alongside some of the biggest organizations in the business. For customers, Scality provides an alternative to the large system vendors in the storage space, who can limit choices on platform options and may not be as agile to respond to new requirements.

Year after year, our focus stays centered on providing our customers with best-in-class solutions for their data storage needs, today and tomorrow.
