How hospitals safeguard terabytes of diagnostic data

These days, hospital tests generate more than a diagnosis. Digital diagnostic images, MRIs, CAT scans, CT scans also give birth to massive amounts of sensitive data. The 463-pound gorilla in the X-ray machine is how to store and secure thousands, if not millions, of images for all patients over their lifetime.

Scality backs 40 hospital systems globally who pair RING with HPE servers to warehouse these important medical images for long-term safekeeping. Chief Product Officer Paul Speciale recently talked to theCube about privacy, data storage and what’s next.

Integrated Practice

Hospital environments are super structured, but the data they generate is not. Digital files for CAT scans and MRIs, for example, generate huge files with even one multi-slice X-ray or digital scan weighing gigabytes in size per file — and that’s per patient. Multiply that by the number of patients the hospital serves and then think about retaining it.

“It’s a perfect use case for what we do, capacity optimized storage for long-term retention,” Speciale says. It also works for backups of electronic patient records, typically stored in databases. Hospitals can consolidate multiple use cases and grow over time, adding servers.

What’s next?

Over the last year, Speciale spotted an uptick in genomics research at hospitals and biotech firms. Using genetic sequencing to better target and treat rare and chronic diseases generates even larger volumes of data than tests: from hundreds of terabytes to petabytes.

Moreover, researchers need to run simulations on that data, iterating quickly on different drug research. This vast data explosion causes a storage bottleneck with consequences for human health and the environment. Scality has now been applied to that problem; partnering for the fast tier one file system and providing the archive. With more than a dozen recent customers in France alone, Scality RING is becoming the storage solution of choice for individual hospitals, hospital systems and academic healthcare centers.
