We’re Making Serious Storage Magic

Scality Named a Leader in the Gartner 2016 Magic Quadrant for Distributed File Systems and Object Storage

Gartner has just released its first “MQ” on this combined storage segment. We’re proud to be recognized as a leader. And we believe that our exclusive expertise and innovation in this market play a significant role.

With enterprise data volumes growing every year, and much of it unstructured, we’ve seen more and more enterprises switch to distributed file systems and object storage. Buyers now treat the two markets as one. In noting this trend, Gartner observes, “In many cases, customers seeking solutions in this market would be better-suited with a single product that has both file and object personalities, so that workloads can seamlessly interact with data using the most appropriate protocol for the specific task and environment.” We couldn’t agree more: we believe this platform description fits the Scality RING to a “T.” To our thinking, it’s one of the compelling reasons behind our leadership designation. Let’s look at some of the others.

A vendor in the Leaders quadrant has the market share, credibility, and marketing and sales capabilities needed to drive the acceptance of new technologies. We believe Scality meets these criteria with a global market presence plus steady year-over-year growth. Our installed base includes 120 large customers covering the ground from service providers, public sector, life sciences, and financial services to research institutions and large enterprises. IT leaders use the Scality RING for email hosting, content distribution, active archives, and private storage clouds. A number of Scality customers have implementations with more than 50 petabytes of storage and 100 billion objects. Deployments at this scale demand the daunting capabilities typified by Big Data cloud infrastructures: exceptional durability, self-healing, and ease of management. We deliver the goods with configurable erasure coding and replication in a peer-to-peer architecture that maintains full efficiency at scale, with no single point of failure.

Gartner also points out that “New and established storage vendors are continuing to develop scalable storage clustered file systems and object storage products to address cost and scalability limitations in traditional, scale-up storage environments.” The Scality RING is among these solutions: we expressly designed the RING to run on commodity x86 servers, for true cloud economics. And as a software-defined platform, it scales linearly with virtually no limits. This is why Scality is a natural choice for customers with multi-petabyte environments spread over geographically distributed sites.

Yet another Scality advantage is smooth, reliable performance for challenging workloads like small files and random input/output. We believe this makes Scality a credible option to replace traditional NAS for unstructured and semi-structured data.

To close, here’s some food for thought: Gartner projects that, “By 2021, more than 80% of business data will be stored in scale-out storage systems in enterprise and cloud data centers, up from 30% today.” To which we respond: Why wait 5 years?
