The smart stadium that data built: Game day just got more secure

Tottenham Hotspur football club is one of the Premier League’s “big six” — so it only seems fitting that they have a world-class, award-winning stadium to match. Creating a new benchmark in stadium design, the £1 billion home to the Spurs is among the smartest, most connected stadiums in the world. And it shows.

With a 62,062 capacity, the stadium hosts unforgettable game day experiences for its over 3 million visitors each year. To create entertaining and engaging interactions for fans while also prioritizing safety, Tottenham needed to embed technology throughout the 1.3 million square feet of its massive new stadium.

With dreams of building an iconic, state-of-the-art arena to serve generations of fans, Tottenham knew they required experienced, first-rate technology partners who could deliver. Teaming up with HPE and Scality made their vision a reality.

HPE was chosen due to its extensive experience in building and implementing end-to-end solutions. Scality RING was chosen as the foundational technology to guarantee that every visitor has a safe experience.

Building a new, modern stadium for Tottenham Hotspur football

As one of the most technologically advanced stadiums ever constructed, Tottenham Hotspur arena uses tech to enhance nearly every aspect of game day — from retail and security to broadcasting, energy management and more. Its digital platform integrates tech solutions from 12 service suppliers.

Everything is connected, adaptable and automated to reduce friction, increase operational efficiencies and impress Spurs fans. Ticketless entry helps cut down on long lines to get in. Under the seat Aruba Access Points provide 100% connectivity across all facilities for a possible crowd of more than 62,000 attendees. Concessions – all 60+ food and drink outlets – are cashless for smooth and quick service. Robotic technology helps keep the stadium clean and hygienic.

Scality and HPE help Tottenham manage data edge to core — and support fan safety

The HPE + Scality solution helps Tottenham manage video files from more than 700 CCTV cameras. It also manages data edge-to-core by directly storing video from cameras positioned throughout the stadium in a data lake repository within the core data center.

To store data from so many high-density video files, the Spurs turned to HPE Apollo 4000 servers with Scality RING, which offers seamless capacity expansion, cost efficiency, high density and the proper performance to store video directly to a data lake repository. This HPE + Scality solution aids the stadium in providing a secure environment for all guests. Additionally, the platform serves as a Veeam Backup Repository, enhancing data protection and durability.

“We need the data, the analytics, and the intelligence… We now have more data sources than any other stadium in the world. It’s an accelerator for us to drive more revenues. But at its heart, it’s an enabler for us to deliver an enhanced fan experience.”

Fran Jones, head of partnerships, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Scoring a win with simple, scalable data storage

“Creating a technology infrastructure to support an enhanced visitor experience requires solutions that can meet the growing demands of visitors that come to our new stadium… The data center is at the heart of everything we do.”

Sanjeev Katwa, chief technology officer, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Simple, scalable storage for the huge volume of data generated within the stadium is mission-critical for Tottenham — and it’s crucial to have expert technology partners who can meet such large-scale challenges.

Scality is proud to be one of those partners, helping Tottenham Hotspur achieve its dream: an intelligent, living arena that will continue to wow fans for many years to come.

“I think you are too humble when you say, ‘beautiful stadium.’  You have to say the best stadium in the world. That’s the reality.”

Jose Mourinho, head coach, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club
