15 I was reading a great article recently called “What separates us from the animals?” by Thomas Suddendorf. In it, he looks at the key differences between humans and animals but interestingly distills those difference down to just two: our open-ended ability to imagine and reflect on different situations our deep-seated drive to link our scenario-building minds together We’re an incredibly innovative and creative people, who also have an amazing ability to bond together and solve great challenges. It is with these thoughts in mind that I decided to join Scality as Chief Marketing Officer. I wanted to join a team that is continuously innovating and ready to take on the thorniest of problems and solve them. One of the greatest challenges today is how to store and process our digital world. We’re generating more data than ever before from movie streaming, online commerce, digital medicine, genomics research, surveillance, big data analytics, and many other applications. However, this is only the beginning, Cisco and Ericsson recently estimated that by 2020, there’ll be more than 50 billion connected IoT devices – IoT Market – Forecasts at a glance – IoT Analytics – Market Insights for the Internet Of Things Imagine the amount of data and demands for storage when there are 7X more connected devices versus people on earth. Storing and analyzing that data requires new thinking and a new type of storage. We can no longer rely on the traditional expensive storage arrays of the past (EMC, NetApp and the like). We need software defined object storage (SDS). In 2009, a group of thought leaders got together to form Scality to solve this data challenge. They came from a background of developing software for large scale consumer infrastructures – like software.com and uunet. Scality looks at storage differently : no more dedicated storage arrays but flexible and dynamic software defined storage scalability without limits using object storage (no more layers of indirection) inherently cost effective with innovative techniques like Scality’s inbuilt erasure coding (pretty smart erasure coding implementation) The Scality RING, which they developed, is a highly scalable, resilient, always-on service that few vendors can compete with. I know, I tried for a number of years to compete while at Cloudian. The ability of the RING to handle the thorniest storage problems is unchallenged (from 100s TBs to 100s PBs). I started out life working on Oracle 6.2, the first scale-out clustered Oracle Database release – building scale-out databases across a sea of nodes before it was fashionable. After that, I joined NetApp, as I was impressed by their data management and simplicity of their user experience (afraid they have lost their way on that recently). At Scality, I see a product which is a marriage of both – scale out architecture and simplicity of management. The world of enterprise storage is dramatically changing.
